Sew Silky

Finally you know how to sew, one thing checked off your to do list. However, everything you've made is cotton, which IS the easiest fabric to work with.  If you feel you're ready for a challenge, take a leap into silks. Of course there are various types of silk fabrics like georgette, satin charmeuse, crepe de chine (CDC as know in the "industry"), and others but choose something that you want to wear. Part of designing something beautiful is not just the silhouette or details on the garment but choosing the right fabric for that design. Pick up a simple pattern and give it a try, even a simple tank or cami can be just the perfect accent piece in your wardrobe. 

Here are some useful tips when working with silk:
 - Shears: Silk fibers dull cutting blades quickly so make sure they are extra sharp. Also try serrated shears.  
 - Needles: Microtex needles, also know as "sharps" are a great choice. A 70/10 is good mid-range needle size. If the needle is dull it will make a popping sound when striking the fabric or pulls threads of fabric, when dull replace immediately.  
 - Pins: Invest in good quality fine glass head pins (this is also helpful when working with other fabrics) Dull or standard gauge pins may snag the silk fibers and leave puncture marks. 
 - Markers: Tailor's chalk and non-wax tracing paper work well for marking. Avoid all air or water erasable markers because they can leave a permanent mark.
 - Thread: Use a high quality polyester or silk thread. Silk thread is preferred, because it is less likely to leave thread marks if removed but it's not necessary.
